Gualala Redwoods is fortunate to have excellent second growth coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forests. Remarkably, redwood has unique regenerative abilities in that its stumps sprout after logging and grow quickly. Rot resistant redwood lumber is valued for decks and fences.

In the foreground is a planted redwood seedling. Behind it are sprouts growing from the stump of a recently cut second growth redwood. The second growth redwood was a sprout from the stump (right rear) of an old growth tree that was cut in the 1890s.
